Carry a range rather than relying on one large tab. Small tabs give concentrated movement for crowns, sharp lows and final correction. Medium tabs handle most door dings and broad shallow lows. Larger tabs spread the load over a wider area, making them useful for soft hail damage and open sections of larger dents.

Profile matters as much as size. Flat tabs suit flatter panel areas. Curved tabs follow body lines and rounded sections more closely. Crease and narrow tabs focus force where a standard round tab is too broad. The best tab is usually the smallest profile that gives stable adhesion over the low area. Going too large can move metal outside the target and create more finishing work.

Clean glue from tabs after each pull. Do not scrape aggressively across the tab face, as gouges reduce contact and create weak spots. Retire tabs with distorted faces, damaged stems or persistent contamination. Replacing a worn tab costs less than losing time on unreliable pulls.

Release agent and a safe removal method

Release agent is essential because it lets you remove the tab without twisting it off or prising against the paint. Use a purpose-made PDR release product where possible, applied in a controlled amount at the glue edge. Let it work into the bond, then remove the tab with a gentle side-to-side action.

Avoid treating release agent as a substitute for judgement. Excess product can spread across the work area and contaminate the next pull if it is not cleaned away. Likewise, pulling a tab off sharply may be quick, but it risks stressing paint and can snap a tab stem. The cleanest workflow is release, remove, wipe the panel, then inspect the metal under the light before the next pull.

Panel cleaner and clean wiping cloths

Panel preparation is one of the most overlooked parts of glue pulling. Road film, polish residue, wax, traffic grime, moisture and silicone all interfere with adhesion. Clean the repair area before the first pull and clean it again after release agent has been used.

Use a suitable automotive panel cleaner or isopropyl alcohol product with clean, lint-free cloths. Reserve separate cloths for cleaner and release agent. Using the same cloth for both can transfer residue back onto the panel, creating the adhesion problem you were trying to prevent.

Do not flood trim gaps, electrical areas or fresh paint with cleaner. A lightly moistened cloth is generally enough. If the vehicle has just been polished or detailed, allow extra time for proper preparation because surface dressings can be difficult to spot but easy to blame for failed glue pulls.

Glue removal and housekeeping supplies

Keep plastic scrapers, suitable adhesive-removal materials and spare wiping cloths in the same case as your glue system. Hardened glue fragments left around a repair can obstruct tab placement and make the panel harder to read. They also look careless to a customer when a mobile job is finished.

Paint condition is the main trade-off. Original, healthy factory paint normally gives the technician more confidence. Repainted panels, body filler repairs and brittle paint need a cautious test pull, lower force and sometimes a different method altogether. Glue pulling is valuable, but it should not be forced where the risk is not acceptable.

Use your PDR light after each pull. The reflection tells you whether the low has lifted, whether a crown has developed, and whether it is time to switch to knockdown work. Repeatedly pulling without reading the panel can overcorrect the area and extend the repair.

Build a replenishment routine that prevents downtime

The most useful consumables are the ones you have when the job arrives. Check stock before it becomes urgent.
