Most professional tab sets include a mixture of rigid and flexible plastics. Rigid tabs are useful for direct, decisive pulls on stable lows. Flexible tabs are more forgiving on soft damage and curved panels. Neither is universally better. The correct choice depends on panel shape, paint condition, temperature and how much force the repair can tolerate.

The stem matters too. A sturdy, well-centred stem keeps the pull straight and reduces twisting. Wide stems can provide stability with a mini lifter, while designs intended for slide hammer work must withstand repeated impact without bending or snapping. If a tab repeatedly fails at the stem, the issue may be tab quality, but it can also indicate excessive pull force or poor adhesive contact.

Match the tab to the pulling tool. A mini lifter provides controlled, repeatable tension and is often the better option for small to medium repairs. A slide hammer can move larger or more stubborn lows, but it is less forgiving. Use it when the panel and tab setup call for stronger action, not because the first gentle pull did not finish the repair.

Glue Control Is Part of Tab Selection

The strongest tab will not perform properly on contaminated paint, cold metal or poorly managed glue. Clean the panel with an appropriate surface preparation product, then make sure it is dry. Residue from polish, wax, traffic film or silicone can cause early releases and inconsistent pulls.

Panel temperature changes the behaviour of both glue and paint. In cold conditions, warm the panel and tab area carefully so the glue can bond properly. In excessive heat, glue may stay too soft and stretch rather than hold. Paint condition also matters. Refinished panels, aged paint and unknown repair history deserve a cautious approach. Test with light pulls before applying serious force.

Pull, Read, Correct, Repeat

After releasing the tab, inspect the panel before fitting another. If the centre rose but a crown became clearer, tap the crown down with a suitable knockdown tip. If the panel remains low but has softened, step down to a smaller tab. If the area has become tight and responsive, switch to pushing from behind where access allows.

Do not leave glue residue until the end of the job. Remove it safely with the correct release method and check the paint as you work. This keeps the reflection clean and prevents residue from affecting the next bond.

The most common mistake is using maximum force before understanding the panel. Other avoidable problems include selecting a tab that is too large for a tight low, pulling at an angle, fitting a tab over a crown, and reusing tabs with damaged or contaminated faces.
