A dent can look straightforward under workshop lighting, then show every low, crown and distorted reflection when the vehicle is moved outside. That is why technicians ask, what is a PDR light? It is not simply a lamp for seeing the panel. It is a controlled reflection tool that lets you read metal movement accurately while repairing a dent without paint, filler or repainting.
For paintless dent repair, the quality of the reflection controls the quality of the finish. A good PDR light shows where the damage starts, how far it spreads and whether each push is improving the panel or creating a high spot. It helps turn a judgement call into a repeatable repair process.
A PDR light is an adjustable LED light board or lamp designed to project a clear pattern onto a vehicle panel. Most units use contrasting lines, bands or a soft gradient. When the panel is dented, that pattern bends and compresses. As the metal returns to shape, the pattern becomes straighter and more even.
Technicians position the light so they can see its reflection from their working angle. They then use a rod, pick, glue puller, hammer and knockdown as required, watching the reflection after every controlled movement. The light exposes subtle changes that are easy to miss by touch alone, particularly on large shallow dents and modern body lines.
A PDR light therefore does two jobs. First, it locates the true damage area, including the crown around the visible dent. Second, it provides continuous feedback during the repair. Without a reliable reading light, it is possible to push the centre up while leaving tension around the edge, or to finish with a small high spot that remains obvious in daylight.
Overhead workshop lights are useful for general visibility, but they rarely create a consistent reflection that follows the technician around the panel. On white, silver and light-coloured vehicles, small imperfections can disappear completely under flat lighting.
A dedicated PDR light gives you a controlled pattern at a controlled distance. You can move it closer for a sharper reading, pull it back to assess the overall panel, or change its angle to reveal a low that was hidden from the previous position. This matters on repairs where the difference between acceptable and finished is only a few millimetres of metal movement.
The light also saves time. Instead of making repeated guesses and checking the vehicle outdoors, the technician can see the panel condition in real time. For mobile operators and busy reconditioning teams, that faster decision-making can protect both cycle time and repair margins.
The pattern on a PDR light works like a visual map of the panel. A low area distorts the reflected lines in one direction, while a high spot distorts them in the opposite direction. The exact appearance changes with the dent type, panel contour, colour and viewing angle, so there is no single pattern that applies to every repair.
A typical dent has more than one area to manage. The deepest point may need gradual lifting, but the surrounding crown often holds tension. Pushing only the low can create a sharp high or trap the panel in an uneven shape. The reflection helps the technician identify whether the panel needs a soft push, a precise tip, a glue pull or a controlled knockdown before further lifting.
On a shallow door dent, for example, the reflection may show a wide low with a narrow tension line along one edge. On a hail dent, the damage may be more central and compact. On a body line, the changing panel shape makes the reading more demanding, and a line-board style light can be particularly useful for tracking the original contour.
Experience still matters. A PDR light shows the result of metal movement, but it does not select the correct tool tip, access point or repair method for you. The best technicians combine the light reading with feel, panel knowledge and careful pressure control.
Most professional PDR lighting systems fall into two practical categories: line boards and fog or gradient lights. Many modern boards allow the technician to switch between patterns, which is useful when working across different panels and damage types.
A line board displays clear contrasting stripes, commonly black and white or yellow and black. The stripes make it easier to pinpoint small highs and lows because even minor panel movement changes the direction of a straight line. They are especially useful for finishing work, hail repair, body lines and sharp dents where precision is the priority.
The trade-off is that stripe patterns can feel visually busy on heavily distorted panels or in difficult reflections. Technicians often adjust brightness, angle and distance before the damage reads clearly.
Fog lights use a softer transition between light and dark rather than distinct lines. They can provide a broader, calmer view of the panel and are often preferred for reading large soft lows, aluminium panels or initial assessment work. The gradual change in reflection can make overall panel shape easier to judge.
They may be less precise than stripes for locating a tiny finishing high. This is why a board with both options can make sense for a technician handling varied retail, hail and used-car work.
Light quality matters, but the support system matters just as much. A bright board that will not hold its position, has a short lead or is awkward to move around a vehicle quickly becomes a source of lost time.
When choosing a PDR light, check the size of the illuminated surface, brightness control and available patterns. A larger board helps with broad panels such as bonnets, roofs and rear quarters, while a compact light is easier to carry for mobile repairs and tight workshop bays. Variable brightness is valuable because a reflection that works on a dark metallic finish may be too harsh on a white panel.
Also consider the stand or mounting option. A stable tripod, wheeled stand, suction mount or adjustable arm should allow smooth height and angle changes without drifting. For roof work, the board needs enough reach to sit above the panel. For doors and lower quarters, it should drop low and remain secure.
Power supply is another practical decision. Mains-powered units provide dependable long-running output in a fixed workshop. Rechargeable systems reduce cable clutter and suit mobile technicians, although battery capacity and charging routines need to match a full day of work. If you regularly work outside or at customer sites, portability can be more valuable than the largest possible board.
There is no universal position for every dent. Start by placing the light on the opposite side of the panel from your viewing position, then move it until the reflection crosses the damage clearly. Rotate the board or change the pattern if the lines are running in an unhelpful direction.
For the initial read, step back slightly and look at the full distorted area rather than only the deepest point. This shows the crown and gives a better sense of how the panel is carrying tension. Once you begin the repair, bring your view closer and use the light to guide smaller corrections.
Keep the board steady while making a precise push. If the light moves at the same time as the tool, it becomes harder to judge whether the metal or the reflection has changed. After a few pushes, pause and reassess from a wider angle. A repair that appears clean from one position can still show a low or high when the light is moved.
It also helps to reduce competing reflections. Switch off or reposition nearby lights where possible, close the workshop door if direct sunlight is cutting across the panel, and keep the paint surface clean. Dust, water marks and polish residue can interfere with a crisp reading.
A PDR light is one of the core tools in a practical repair setup, alongside access tools, glue-pulling equipment, knockdowns and a suitable hammer. It does not replace any of them. It makes each of them more accurate.
For a newer technician, a quality light shortens the learning curve because it gives immediate feedback on every push. For an experienced operator, it improves consistency across panels, vehicle colours and lighting conditions. It can also support clearer quality control before handing a vehicle back to the customer.
The right size and pattern depend on your work. A mobile technician may prioritise a lightweight rechargeable board with a quick stand. A body shop or hail team may need a larger, highly adjustable unit that can run for long periods.
