Every dent repair starts with the same decision: do you push the metal back from behind the panel, or pull it out from the front? Push rods and glue pulling are the two core methods of paintless dent repair, and knowing which one fits which dent is what separates a clean, invisible repair from a long afternoon of frustration. This guide breaks down how each method works, where each one wins, and how professional technicians combine them on real jobs.

How the Two Methods Work

Push rods work from behind the panel. You reach the back side of the dent through a window gap, brace hole or removed trim piece, place the tip of a PDR rod exactly under the low spot, and push the metal up in small, controlled presses while reading the reflection in a PDR lamp. It is the original PDR technique and still the most precise way to move metal.

Glue pulling works from the outside. You bond a plastic glue tab to the center of the dent with hot PDR glue, attach a slide hammer or lifter to the tab, and pull the metal outward. The glue then releases cleanly with alcohol, leaving the paint untouched. No access behind the panel is needed at all.

When to Use Push Rods

  • You have access behind the panel. Doors, hoods, roofs and quarter panels usually offer a path for a rod. If you can reach the back of the dent, pushing gives you the finest control.
  • Small, sharp dents. A rod tip lets you work a crease or a sharp low spot millimeter by millimeter – a level of precision pulling cannot match.
  • Hail damage. Dozens of small, shallow dents on a roof or hood are fastest to clear with rods and whale tails, panel by panel, without gluing and cleaning every single dent.
  • No consumables. A quality spring steel rod lasts for years. Glue pulling consumes glue sticks and wears tabs on every job.

When to Use Glue Pulling

  • No rear access. This is the number one reason glue pulling exists. Braced door sections, double-skinned panels, boxed rails and pillar areas simply cannot be reached with a rod. Bond a tab and pull from the outside instead.
  • Aluminium panels. Aluminium hoods and doors are common on modern cars and are less forgiving when pushed. Controlled outward pulls with the right tab are often the safer route.
  • Large, soft dents. A big shallow dent on a door or quarter panel can be brought up 80–90% in a few pulls with a large tab, saving enormous time compared to pushing the whole area up from behind.
  • Edge and bodyline dents. Dents sitting on or near a bodyline respond well to a line of small tabs pulled in sequence – a job where a rod tip struggles for angle.

The Truth: Professionals Use Both

On real jobs the two methods are not rivals – they are stages of the same repair. A typical workflow on a large dent looks like this:

  1. Pull first. Bring the bulk of the dent up with one or two glue pulls. This does the heavy lifting in minutes.
  2. Knock down the highs. Pulls almost always leave small high spots. Tap them back level with a knockdown and hammer.
  3. Push to finish. If there is any access, fine-tune the remaining lows with a rod for a glass-flat final surface under the lamp.

Which Should a Beginner Learn First?

Start with glue pulling to get repairs done early – the feedback is immediate and the risk of damaging paint from the back side is zero. But begin practicing with rods from day one on a practice panel, because rod control is the skill that lets you charge professional rates for sharp dents and hail work. FAQ

Is glue pulling safe for the paint?

Yes, on factory paint in good condition. PDR glue is formulated to bond firmly and release cleanly with isopropyl alcohol. Repainted or damaged clear coat is the exception – always test a small area first.

Can glue pulling fully replace push rods?

No. Pulling moves metal in larger, less precise steps. Sharp dents, creases and final finishing still need rod work or knockdown control to reach an invisible result.

Does temperature affect PDR glue?

Strongly. Glue formulas are graded by working temperature – a winter glue grips harder in cold panels, a summer or all-season formula prevents over-bonding in heat. We stock winter and 4-season silicone glue for exactly this reason.

Which method is better for hail damage?

Rods and whale tails, in almost every case. Hail means many small dents, and gluing, pulling and cleaning each one individually is far slower than working down the panel from behind.
