A dent can look finished under poor light, then show a low spot, stretched crown or dirty blend as soon as the vehicle moves outside. Learning how to position PDR lights is what turns a PDR lamp from a workshop accessory into a reliable reading tool. The goal is not to flood the panel with brightness. It is to create a reflection that shows exactly where the metal is high, low, tight and moving.

For most repairs, the best light position changes several times. You may start with a broad view to map the damage, move closer for controlled pushes, then alter the angle again for final finishing. Treat the light as part of the repair process, not something to set once and ignore.

Start with the reflection, not the dent

PDR lighting works by reflecting a line board, striped lens or contrasting panel in the paintwork. When the panel is straight, those lines appear straight. A dent bends the reflection, giving you a visual map of the metal.

Place the light so you can see the reflected pattern clearly from your working position. You should be able to look at the panel, make a push or tap, and immediately see the effect without stepping around the vehicle. If you are constantly turning your head between the tool and the reflection, reposition the lamp or yourself before continuing.

The useful position is usually where the reflection crosses the centre of the damage at an angle, rather than sitting directly behind it. A straight-on reflection can make a dent look flatter than it is. An angled reflection exaggerates the movement of the lines and makes the low area easier to read.

For a shallow door dent, begin around 45 degrees from the panel and adjust from there. On a bonnet or roof, the light may need to sit higher and further away so the reflection travels across the repair rather than disappearing into the sky-facing surface. There is no fixed distance that suits every panel. Paint colour, panel shape, dent depth and the light pattern all affect the final position.

How to position PDR lights for each stage of repair

The light should serve the work in front of you. Its ideal placement for finding the damage is not always its ideal placement for finishing it.

Mapping the damage

Start with the lamp further back. A wider reflection reveals the overall shape of the impact, including the crown around the dent and any secondary lows that are easy to miss. This is especially useful on large, soft dents in doors, rear quarters and tailgates.

Move the lamp slowly across the panel rather than assuming the first view is accurate. A dent can hide along a body line or within a changing panel contour. By changing the angle, you can identify whether the metal is genuinely low or whether the reflection is simply distorted by the panel’s design.

At this stage, do not chase every irregular line. Identify the deepest area, the strongest crowns and the direction in which the metal has moved. That tells you where controlled pressure or a knockdown should begin.

Making controlled pushes

Once you have selected an access point and tool, bring the light closer or tighten the reflection. The lines should clearly reveal your tool tip when it touches the back of the panel. If you cannot see the tip, your pushes will become guesswork, particularly on aluminium, sharp creases and thin outer skins.

A close light position gives a more sensitive read. Small pushes become visible immediately, which helps you avoid over-pushing. The trade-off is that the narrower view can hide the larger shape of the dent. Make several precise pushes, then pull the light back to check how those changes affect the whole repair.

Keep the light on the side of the panel that lets you see the tip without blocking your access. On a door, this may mean placing the lamp slightly forward or rearward of the dent rather than directly beside it. On a bonnet, a stand-mounted light positioned off the wing often gives a clearer reflection and leaves room for your arm and rod.

Finishing and blending

Final finishing requires a different standard. A dent that has lifted well can still contain tiny highs, small lows and a sharp edge that will be obvious in natural daylight. Shift the light to make the lines more demanding. A shallow angle across the panel is often effective because it exposes subtle texture and unevenness.

Use a softer, broader pattern for blending and checking the final flow of the panel. If the line board is too harsh or too close, you may correct marks that are only visible under an extreme reflection while creating unnecessary work elsewhere. Check from more than one angle before calling the panel finished.

Match light height to the panel

Light height is one of the most common causes of poor reads. If the reflection sits too high or too low, the line pattern may slide over the damage without showing its true depth.

On vertical panels such as doors and rear quarter sections, adjust the lamp so the reflection runs through the middle of the dent. A light placed too low can make the upper portion of the damage hard to read. One placed too high can hide a low near the lower edge of a door.

For horizontal panels, raise the light until the reflected lines reach your natural eyeline. You should not have to crouch awkwardly or stand on tiptoe for every inspection. A stable adjustable stand saves time here, especially when working around bonnets, roofs and boot lids.

Body lines need extra care. Position the light so one or two lines of the pattern cross the body line itself. This shows whether the line is still soft, pushed too high or not yet restored. A reflection that only sits above or below the contour will not give a dependable read.

Control the environment around the lamp

Workshop lighting, windows and glossy objects can interfere with the reflection. Reduce competing light where practical. You do not need a dark room, but you need enough contrast to see the board clearly.

For mobile work, choose the vehicle position first. Avoid aiming the repair panel directly at strong sun if possible, since changing daylight can wash out the PDR light pattern. In a bright unit or outside, a more powerful LED PDR light and a high-contrast board can make the repair easier to read, but correct positioning still matters more than raw output.

Keep the lamp stable. A stand that shifts when you apply pressure, or a light balanced on a trolley, creates a moving reference point. You may think the metal is changing when the lamp is actually moving. Lock the stand, manage the power lead and leave a clear route around the vehicle.

Common positioning mistakes that cost time

The first mistake is placing the light too close from the start. The damage looks dramatic, but you lose the wider picture and can overwork the centre while ignoring the crown. Begin broad, then narrow the read as the repair develops.

The second is working with the lamp directly behind your head. Your own shadow can break the reflection and force you into an uncomfortable stance. Move the light slightly to one side and keep both the panel and tool tip visible.

The third is relying on one angle. A panel may look clean with the light on one side but reveal a remaining low when the lamp moves to the opposite side. This is common on metallic paint, curved doors and repairs close to an edge. Check the finished area from at least two meaningful viewing angles.

Finally, avoid chasing perfectly straight lines on panels that were never perfectly flat. Factory body contours, styling lines and natural paint reflection all affect the pattern. Compare the repair with an undamaged area nearby. The target is a clean, natural panel flow, not a reflection that looks artificial under one extreme light angle.

Choose a position you can repeat

Good PDR light placement is a repeatable habit: establish the overall damage, align the reflection with the centre of the work, make the tool tip visible, then change the angle as the repair becomes finer. A quality adjustable PDR light, stable stand and clear line pattern make those adjustments faster, whether you work in a fixed bay or at the customer’s location.

Before handing the vehicle back, take one last moment to move the light, step back and read the panel as the customer will see it. That final check often separates a quick repair from a repair that stays invisible in real-world light.
