A dent can look finished under poor workshop lighting and still show a hard crown as soon as the vehicle reaches daylight. That final 10 per cent is where repair quality is decided. Knowing how to blend PDR repairs means reducing the remaining tension around a corrected dent until the panel reads naturally from every useful angle - without turning a small repair into a wide, soft area.
Blending is not simply pushing more metal. It is controlled finishing work: reading the distortion, finding the active highs and lows, then making small corrections that preserve the panel’s original shape. Done well, it helps a repair disappear. Done aggressively, it creates oil-canning, stretched metal, and hours of unnecessary clean-up.
After the main low has been raised, the panel usually retains a pattern of small highs, shallow lows and tension around the original impact. The central dent may be gone, but reflected light still reveals a sharp edge, a pinched crown or a slight wobble in the body line. Blending levels those residual imperfections into the surrounding factory panel.
The goal is not to make every reflected line perfectly straight at one viewing angle. Factory panels have shape, texture and sometimes minor production variation. The goal is a stable, natural reflection that does not draw the eye under normal inspection. On a flat bonnet, that demands tighter accuracy than on a curved rear quarter. Metallic paint, dark colours and high-gloss finishes also expose more than white or textured panels.
A good blend is usually local. If you find yourself working a much larger area than the original damage, stop and reassess the read. You may be chasing a reflection caused by the panel’s natural contour rather than a repair-related high.
Blending starts with visibility. Clean the panel and position a PDR light or reflection board so the lines cross the repair at a useful angle. A broad light setting helps you see the overall flow, while a sharper line reveals small crowns and pinpoint highs. Move the light regularly. A defect that appears obvious from one direction may disappear when the reflection travels across it.
Your access and stance matter as much as the light. Choose a position where your pushing hand is stable and your tool tip can contact the metal without flexing or slipping. If access is awkward, do not compensate by using more force. Change the tool, alter the angle, remove a trim piece where appropriate, or use a glue-pull method for the section you cannot reach cleanly.
Before making a correction, identify three things: where the low actually sits, where the tension is holding it, and where the nearest high is affecting the reflection. Technicians often chase the visual centre of a dent, but the active low may sit slightly off-centre because of the panel’s curve or the direction of impact.
Large, soft tips are useful for broad, shallow movement, but they can hide what is happening in a tight finish. For blending, a smaller, well-controlled tip often gives better feedback. The trade-off is obvious: a small tip can create a sharp high if the push is too strong.
Use a polished tip that suits the panel and finish. A sharp tip gives precision around a crease or body line, while a softer cap or rounded tip can spread pressure when you are easing a low without marking the metal. Keep tool tips clean. A small piece of grit between the tip and panel can leave a mark that is harder to correct than the original finishing low.
Start by reducing the remaining low with tiny, deliberate pushes. Do not attempt to finish it in one movement. Place the tip, confirm its position in the reflection, and make a light push that barely changes the line. Release, read the panel, and repeat only if the low is still active.
The best finishing pushes are often smaller than technicians expect. When the dent is nearly level, metal responds quickly. A push that felt appropriate during the rough-out stage may now create a visible high. Work in short sequences and let the panel show you what it needs.
As the low rises, the surrounding crown becomes more important. A crown holds tension in the repair area and can make a nearly finished low appear deeper than it is. Use a knockdown and lightweight blending hammer to relax the high in measured taps. The knockdown should contact the peak of the high, not the apparent middle of the reflection line. Accuracy is more valuable than impact force.
Move back and forth between pushing and knocking down. Raise a low slightly, settle the adjacent high, then reread. This is the core rhythm of blending. Pushing without knockdown work can lock tension into the panel. Knocking down without supporting the low can sink the repair and spread the damage.
For a shallow, broad dent, use more distributed movement. Work from the outside tension towards the centre while keeping each correction light. For a tighter impact or crease, establish the line first and blend the surrounding metal afterwards. Trying to soften the whole repair before the structural feature is controlled can leave the crease distorted and difficult to recover.
Do not stare at the same reflection line for too long. Shift the light, step sideways, lower your viewing angle and check the panel from the direction a customer is likely to see it. This prevents tunnel vision and reveals whether you have corrected the metal or merely improved one reflection.
A useful check is to turn the light off briefly and inspect the panel under general workshop lighting, then use a handheld light at a low angle. If the repair only looks good with one very specific board position, it is not fully blended. Daylight remains the final test whenever practical.
The most common error is overpushing the final low. A technician sees a remaining defect, applies a stronger push, then spends the next several minutes knocking down the high created by that push. Slow down as the repair improves. The closer the panel gets, the less metal movement is required.
Another mistake is treating every reflection irregularity as damage. Curved panels naturally bend light, and factory paint texture can make a line look imperfect. Compare the repair with an undamaged area of the same panel where possible. If the reflection changes in the same way on both sides, it may be panel shape rather than a fault to remove.
Poor knockdown control is equally costly. Heavy tapping can flatten a crown but also stretch the area or damage the paint surface. Use a clean knockdown, light hammer, and a controlled wrist movement. The sound and feel should remain consistent. If you need force, the high may not be the real source of tension.
Finally, avoid continuing simply because the tool is already in your hand. If the reflection gets worse, pause. Reposition the light and check whether you have lost the low, created a high, or moved the panel beyond the point where conventional pushing is the best option. A brief reset protects repair time and panel quality.
Reliable finishing depends on tools that give predictable contact and clear feedback. A quality PDR light makes small defects visible before they become customer call-backs. Keep dedicated knockdowns and blending hammers close to the work area. A strong glue pull can create a new high faster than a finishing push.
