For a deeper soft low behind an accessible door skin, a rod with a suitable rounded tip can move metal smoothly. Use short, measured pushes while watching the reflection. A larger tip spreads force and reduces the chance of creating pinpoints, especially during the early stages of the repair.
For a tighter low, a smaller tip may be needed, but precision becomes more important. A sharp tool tip used too aggressively will leave marks that take longer to finish than the original dent. A hammer and knockdown allow the technician to soften high areas while maintaining control of the repair. Use light, accurate taps. The goal is to relax tension, not flatten the panel by force. There is a trade-off. Knocking down too early or too heavily can lose the panel’s natural shape and turn a controlled repair into a wide finishing exercise.
