A repair can look finished from two metres away and still fail under a PDR light. The usual reason is a small high spot left in the crown or centre of the repair. Knowing how to remove high spots cleanly is what separates a fast, repeatable finish from a panel that keeps moving as you chase it.
High spots are not simply metal sitting too high. They are areas where the panel has been compressed, stretched, or pushed beyond the surrounding surface. Treat them too aggressively and you can create a low, crack the clear coat, or add unnecessary distortion. Treat them too softly and the reflection will continue to show a hard line. The job is to release excess tension with the least possible force.
Do not begin knocking down as soon as you see a bright line in the board. First confirm whether it is a true high spot, a crown around the original damage, or a reflection caused by a nearby low. This matters because a low can make adjacent metal appear high, particularly on body lines, aluminium panels, and large shallow dents.
Set your PDR light or reflection board so the lines travel across the repair at a useful angle. A high spot normally interrupts the lines with a sharp, tight bend. A low spot produces a wider, softer movement. Move your viewing position before making a decision. If the distortion changes dramatically when you move the light, you may be reading the panel angle rather than the metal.
Feel can support what the light tells you, but it should not replace it. On a clean panel, lightly pass the back of a fingernail or a soft fingertip over the suspect area. A true high often has a defined edge. On thin steel, it may feel almost like a grain of sand under the paint.
The tip material and shape determine how much force reaches the panel. There is no single best knockdown for every high spot. A sharp metal tip can be useful for a tight, stubborn pin high, but it is not the safe default for final finishing. For most painted panels, begin with a softer, broader option and increase precision only when the read demands it.
Plastic, nylon, Delrin and rubber-tipped knockdowns spread impact and reduce the risk of marking the finish. They suit soft crowns, broad pressure points and final blending. A polished steel tip gives more direct correction and can work well on a small, defined high spot when paired with very light strikes. Carbon fibre and composite tips offer another controlled option, depending on the panel and the technician's preference.
Tip size matters as much as material. A broad tip on a pin high may flatten the surrounding metal before it corrects the peak. A narrow tip on a soft crown can create a new pit. Match the contact area to the size of the high, not just to the size of the dent.
Use a light hammer with a balanced head. Heavy striking is rarely the answer in paintless dent repair. The aim is a controlled tap that relaxes metal, not a blow that forces it down. A quality hammer and knockdown set gives clearer feedback and makes small corrections easier to repeat.
Place the knockdown tip directly on the highest point shown by the reflection. Keep it upright to the panel where possible. An angled tip can slide, spread force unpredictably, and leave an unwanted mark, especially on a curved door or wing.
Start with one or two light taps, then stop and read the panel. Do not strike repeatedly without checking the lines. A high spot can move or relax after a single tap, and continued tapping can quickly turn a clean correction into a low.
When the high has a hard centre, work from the peak outward in very small stages. This prevents you from driving the centre too far while leaving a raised ring around it. Where a crown is holding tension around a low, relieve the crown gradually rather than trying to knock it flat in one area. The metal often settles once the tension is released.
Your free hand also matters. If access allows, use light support behind the panel. A soft brace can prevent a large area from flexing while you knock down a local high. Be careful not to push from behind at the same time as you tap unless that movement is intentional. Opposing force can create a sharper low than expected.
The last percentage of a repair is usually not about removing one obvious high. It is about blending several tiny inconsistencies so the reflection flows naturally. This is where softer tips, lighter taps and more frequent light checks pay off.
For a broad, shallow repair, use a blending hammer or a soft knockdown across the transition zone. The goal is to soften the line between worked and untouched metal. Avoid concentrating every tap on one point. A panel can be technically level in the centre but still show a visible halo at the edge of the repair.
On factory paint with a clear, stable finish, gentle tapping can be very effective. On older paint, previous repaint work, or a panel with uncertain filler beneath it, use extra caution. Paint condition changes the risk. Even a correctly placed strike can damage weak lacquer, so reduce force and inspect the surface closely as you work.
Aluminium deserves its own approach. It does not respond like steel and can become less forgiving if overworked. Use accurate light reading, controlled heat only where your established process calls for it, and minimal impact. If the panel begins to look grainy or unstable, stop forcing it. A slower correction is cheaper than creating a repair that needs refinishing.
The most common mistake is knocking down a high that is actually an optical effect from a nearby low. This usually leaves the technician with a larger low and more tension to manage. Recheck the reflection from more than one angle before committing.
The second mistake is using too much force. If your hammer sound is loud, your grip is tight, or the panel jumps with every strike, reduce the energy. PDR finishing is usually a series of small decisions, not a test of impact.
Another issue is working with a dirty tip or panel. Grit trapped between the knockdown and paint can mark the clear coat. Wipe the area and inspect the tip regularly, particularly when working on lower doors, wheel arches and vehicles that have arrived from wet or gritty roads.
Finally, do not keep correcting a panel once the reflection is acceptable in normal viewing conditions. Perfection under an aggressively positioned board can lead to overworking. The required finish depends on the panel, paint condition, vehicle value and agreed repair standard. A practical repair is one that looks right in real light and remains stable after the vehicle leaves the bay.
Fast finishing comes from having the right tools within reach: a dependable PDR light, a selection of clean knockdown tips, a light finishing hammer, and suitable access tools for controlled support behind the panel. Buying several tip profiles is usually more useful than relying on one hard, pointed knockdown for every repair.
