Dent removal tools start with panel reading

Before metal is moved, the panel must be read properly. A PDR light or reflection board shows the shape of the low area, the crown around it and any high spots created during the impact. Lighting should provide a clean, stable line pattern that remains visible from different working angles. Handle feel matters as much as the visible shape of a rod. A comfortable grip helps maintain steady pressure during long repairs, while a solid shaft transmits feedback from the panel. When selecting rods, check the finish, tip security and shaft stiffness. Polished surfaces are easier to keep clean and less likely to catch on trim or access holes. Interchangeable tips can add flexibility, but fixed tips remain useful where maximum rigidity and precise feedback are required.

Choose leverage before force

The best push is rarely the hardest one. Good leverage allows the technician to make a small, accurate movement and reassess the reflection. This is especially important on aluminium panels, which can react differently from steel and may show pressure marks more readily if worked aggressively.

Use protected leverage points where needed, and keep an eye on the opposite side of the panel. A tool that is stable at the access point gives more precise movement at the tip. If the tool is flexing, slipping or forcing you into an awkward wrist position, change the approach rather than pushing harder.

Glue pulling is essential when access is limited

Not every dent can be reached from behind. Double skins, bracing, sealed areas and complex modern vehicle construction all make glue pulling a necessary part of a practical kit. Flexible tabs can follow curved panels, while firmer tabs may offer more direct transfer on flatter sections. Clean paint, suitable glue temperature and proper glue cure time matter as much as the tab itself.

Glue pulling is not a cure for every panel. Fresh paint, weak refinishing work, damaged clear coat and uncertain paint history all require caution. Test the surface where appropriate, reduce pulling force and choose a different repair route if paint integrity is in doubt. Protecting the original finish is the purpose of PDR, not a risk to take for speed.

Knockdowns and hammers control the finish

Most dents are not finished when the low comes up. As the metal moves, crowns and small high spots become visible in the reflection. Hammers and knockdowns are the tools that refine those areas and return the panel to a natural finish.

A knockdown with a suitable tip lets you reduce a high spot without striking too hard or marking the paint. Plastic, nylon and softer tips are useful for gentle finishing; sharper tips can be effective for pinpoint correction when used carefully. Pair the knockdown with a light hammer and make measured taps while watching the lines. The goal is not to flatten the panel quickly. It is to remove tension gradually while keeping the repair under control.

A common cause of rework is treating knockdown work as an afterthought. It should be part of every push and pull sequence. Raise the low slightly, check the crown, knock down the tension, then read the panel again. That rhythm produces cleaner repairs than trying to correct everything at the end.
