A dent can be technically out and still fail the handover. The reflection may look acceptable from one angle, yet a stretched centre, sharp crown or a run of small highs appears as soon as the vehicle moves outside. Finishing is where repair speed and repair quality meet. Pushing too aggressively at this stage can turn a nearly completed repair into several more minutes of chasing texture. Dent finishing is not simply knocking down the last visible high spots. It is the controlled correction of remaining distortion after the main depth has been removed. The goal is to restore the panel's tension and texture closely enough that the damage does not announce itself in a reflection line.
A finished repair normally has three qualities: the crown is relaxed, the centre is level without being overworked, and the original orange-peel texture has not been flattened or sharpened. On a crisp bonnet or dark door skin, even a very small mismatch can be visible. On a heavily textured panel, the same repair may tolerate slightly more variation. The standard depends on panel position, paint condition, vehicle value and what the customer will see every day.
The last ten per cent of movement often takes more judgement than the first ninety. Metal becomes less willing to move as the dent becomes shallow, and each tool action affects a smaller area. That is why a technician should slow down near the end rather than increasing force.
A quality finish begins with light placement. Your PDR light is not there merely to show the dent. It shows the direction of tension, the location of highs and lows, and whether your last movement improved the panel or only shifted the distortion.
Set the light so the lines run across the area you need to assess. A broad, shallow angle often reveals overall shape and crown tension. Bringing the light closer or changing the angle makes fine lows and sharp highs easier to isolate. Do not stay in one position throughout the repair. A dent that disappears under a favourable line board position may still be obvious from the side.
Read the panel before making another push. Ask whether you are looking at a true low, a high created by a previous push, or tension held in the surrounding crown. A centre low with a tight crown will not finish properly if you keep pushing the centre alone. Conversely, knocking down a feature that is actually part of the panel's natural body line can make the repair worse.
Use both the reflection and your fingertips where access allows. The lamp gives precision; your hand confirms whether the texture and transition feel natural. This is especially useful on flatter panels where a small broad low can be difficult to identify in a single reflection.
The crown is often the reason a shallow dent refuses to settle. It stores the tension created when the impact displaced metal. If that tension remains too strong, centre pushes can produce tiny volcano-like highs, stretched texture or a low that appears to move around the repair.
Release the crown in small, deliberate stages. Choose a soft-tip knockdown for broader pressure and a sharper tip only when a defined high needs direct correction. The objective is not to strike the area flat. It is to reduce tension enough that the centre can return under light pressure.
A common finishing error is using the knockdown too hard because the high is easy to see. Light, repeatable taps with frequent reads are safer than one confident hit. Factory paint can be durable, but edges, previous refinishing work and cold panels all reduce the margin for error.
Finishing tools need to give feedback. A long, heavy rod may move metal efficiently during rough-out, but it can be difficult to control when correcting a pinpoint low near a brace or body line. Switch to a tool with the access, length and tip size that suits the remaining distortion.
For an open panel, a fine-tip rod or pick can provide precise movement if the tip is kept stable. Where access is restricted, a short-handled tool may offer better control than forcing a longer shaft at an awkward angle. The best tool is not necessarily the smallest tip. A tip that is too sharp concentrates pressure and can leave a visible pimple, particularly on thin aluminium or softer outer skins.
Tip selection should follow the size and character of the low. A rounded tip supports a smoother blend over a wider area. A pencil-style tip is useful for a defined low, but only when the surrounding metal is already relaxed. If you need more force than expected, reassess the read rather than pressing harder.
Glue pulling can also be part of finishing, particularly where backside access is limited. Small tabs can lift a remaining low cleanly, but they also create highs quickly when the pull is too strong or poorly centred. Use a controlled pull, inspect the result immediately and be ready to knock down the tension rather than repeating pulls without a new read.
The cleanest finishes usually come from alternating actions, not from completing all pushing before any blending. Make a small push, check the line, soften the resulting high or crown if needed, then reassess. This rhythm keeps the metal close to level and prevents large corrections at the end.
Keep tool pressure slow and intentional. A rapid series of pushes can make it difficult to identify which movement caused a high. It also encourages overcorrection when the reflection appears to change quickly. One controlled push, followed by a short pause to read the panel, is often faster overall because it reduces rework.
Knockdown angle matters as much as strike force. Work at an angle that lets the tip glide with the panel's shape rather than digging into it. On a curved wing or door edge, support the natural contour. On a body line, preserve the line's definition while reducing the adjacent high. Trying to make every area perfectly flat is not the same as returning it to factory form.
The finishing stage is where paint damage can occur despite good dent movement. Check the surface temperature, especially during colder weather or on a panel that has been parked outdoors. Gentle, even warming may improve paint flexibility where appropriate, but excessive heat can create its own problems and should never replace controlled technique.
Be cautious around factory seams, sharp style lines and previous paintwork. Refinished panels may have different adhesion, filler beneath the paint or unpredictable flex. A repair that would be safe on original paint can crack on a repainted door. If the risk is visible, adjust the repair plan and set the customer's expectation before promising a perfect result.
Texture is equally easy to damage. Overpushing smooths the surface unnaturally, while repeated sharp knockdown work can leave a peppered look. Check the repair from different distances. Close inspection finds tool marks; stepping back shows whether the panel flows with the surrounding reflections.
Before removing your light, inspect the repair from at least two line directions and one wider reflection. Open the door, move the vehicle if possible, or use natural light to make sure the result is not dependent on a single set-up. A final wipe with a clean microfibre cloth removes residue that can hide a shallow high or low.
Look specifically for a remaining crown outside the original damage area, a centre that is too smooth, isolated sharp highs and distortion along a body line. These are the details customers notice when washing the vehicle or viewing it beside another car. If only one small imperfection remains, decide whether further movement will improve the result or create unnecessary risk.
